Victory Hand, not peace

The character at U+270C is formally Victory Hand, inherited from older symbol sets and requiring a variation selector for colour presentation. The peace reading came later and is now the dominant one in most of the world.

It supports skin tone modifiers, and the gesture is also the standard pose in East Asian photography, where it carries no peace or victory meaning at all - it is simply what you do for a camera.

Where it is offensive

Reversed, with the back of the hand facing outward, the gesture is a serious insult in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Emoji vendors draw it palm-out, so the emoji itself is safe.

It is worth knowing on an international server because the reversed form appears in images and reaction GIFs where the emoji's fixed orientation does not protect you.

In server configuration

It has limited structural use, appearing mostly in goodbye and farewell channel naming and in casual role sets.

The reversed-gesture offence does not apply to the emoji, which vendors draw palm-out, but it is worth knowing for reaction images on international servers.

Selector plus modifiers

Victory Hand needs a variation selector for colour and also takes skin tone modifiers, so a fully specified version is a three-codepoint sequence.

That combination makes it one of the more fragile emoji in copy-paste, and one of the more expensive against a character limit.

The character was encoded as Victory Hand from older symbol sets, reflecting its wartime association. The peace meaning attached during the 1960s and eventually became dominant in most of the world.

In Japan and much of East Asia it has a third life entirely, as the default pose for photographs, with no connection to either victory or peace.
