Discord Role Color Preview

A member's displayed colour comes from their highest-positioned role that has a colour set - not their highest role overall. A moderator role sitting above a colour role but left uncoloured is skipped, so the colour role below it still applies.

The value 0 means "no colour" rather than black. A role set to 0 is transparent for display purposes and falls through to the next coloured role down. Getting an actually black name requires a value just above zero, which is why #000001 appears in so many servers.

This separation is useful once you notice it. Permission roles can be left uncoloured and positioned anywhere, while colour roles sit lower and are handed out freely, and the two systems stop interfering with each other.

Role colours are drawn on Discord's dark background for most users and its light background for the rest. Mid-tone saturated colours survive both. Very dark colours vanish on dark theme and very pale ones vanish on light, so the safe range is narrower than the picker suggests.

Contrast between roles matters as much as contrast against the background. A server with fifteen shades of blue communicates nothing at a glance, because the whole point of a coloured name is telling roles apart in a moving channel.

Staff roles use red or gold to stand out. Rank tiers work well as a gradient. Fun roles suit softer pastels that do not compete visually. A consistent palette makes your member list look intentional.
