The About Me field on a Discord profile allows 190 characters, which is shorter than most people expect and shorter than a tweet. Custom status is 128 characters. Server-specific profiles have their own separate About Me with the same 190-character budget, so you can present differently in different communities.

Line breaks count as characters, and a bio built from four short centred lines can spend a meaningful fraction of its budget on whitespace. If you are close to the limit, collapsing to two lines usually buys back enough room for another few words.

Markdown works in About Me: bold, italics, strikethrough and inline code all render. Links render as text rather than becoming clickable, so a URL in a bio costs you its full character length and gains nothing that plain text would not.

At 190 characters you get roughly one idea and one detail. Bios that work tend to pick a single concrete thing - what you build, what you play, where you are - rather than listing five traits that could describe anyone.

Symbol dividers and styled unicode are popular for a reason: they make a short bio look deliberate. But the same caveat applies as anywhere else on Discord - unicode styled text is unreadable to screen readers and unsearchable, so keep at least your name or handle in plain characters.

Most people glance at a profile for a second or two. A bio that front-loads the most important details, like age, pronouns and one hobby, reads better than a dense paragraph. Emoji and unicode dividers add visual rhythm without adding length.
