Presence versus status, and who sees what

Presence - online, idle, do not disturb, invisible - is separate from the custom status text and behaves differently. Do Not Disturb suppresses notification popups on your own client without hiding you from anyone; invisible shows you as offline while leaving everything else working.

Idle is set automatically after a period without input, and manually setting it does not change what others can see about your activity. None of these affect whether people can message you.

Custom status text is visible regardless of presence, including while invisible - which surprises people who assume going invisible hides everything. If the status says something you would not want read, clear it before going invisible.

Custom status and how it differs from presence

Custom status is free text of up to 128 characters, optionally with an emoji and an expiry. It is distinct from presence - online, idle, do not disturb, invisible - and from activity, which is what Discord sets automatically when it detects a game.

The emoji slot accepts standard Unicode emoji for everyone, and custom emoji only with Nitro. A custom emoji set by a Nitro user appears correctly to everyone who can see it, so the restriction is on setting rather than viewing.

Expiry is the underused part. A status can be set to clear after 30 minutes, an hour, four hours, or at end of day, which suits temporary notes like "in a meeting" far better than a status you have to remember to remove.

Where it appears

The custom status shows in your profile popout, in the member list on hover, and in the friends list. It does not replace your name anywhere, so it is not seen by people simply reading your messages in a channel.

Markdown does not render in a status - asterisks appear literally. Unicode styled text works, with the usual caveat that it is unreadable to screen readers and cannot be searched.

Making your status stand out

A status with an emoji and a short phrase reads better than a plain sentence. Change it regularly to keep your profile feeling alive.
