Servers that need real names or a format usually enforce it by withholding Change Nickname from @everyone and having moderators set names on join. That is reliable but does not scale past a few joins a day.

The alternative is a bot that normalises nicknames automatically - stripping unicode, enforcing a prefix, or copying a verified name from an external system. This is common on gaming and community servers that link accounts.

Either way the rule needs stating in the rules channel. Members generally comply with a naming scheme they were told about, and react badly to having their name changed with no explanation.

A nickname overrides your display name in one server only, and it is stored on the membership rather than the account. Changing it in one server affects nothing anywhere else, and leaving the server discards it.

The limit is 32 characters and the rules are permissive: capitals, spaces, emoji and unicode are all accepted, unlike the username field which allows only lowercase letters, digits, underscores and full stops.

Changing your own requires the Change Nickname permission, and changing someone else's requires Manage Nicknames. Both are commonly restricted, which is why some servers enforce a naming scheme by simply not granting the first.

Heavily styled unicode nicknames are unsearchable and often unmentionable - moderators cannot type them to find you, and neither can anyone wanting to ping you. Many servers ban them for that reason rather than aesthetics.

Leading symbols are a related trick: characters that sort before letters push a name to the top of the member list. Servers that care about this normalise nicknames on join, since a member list sorted by who used the most obscure character serves nobody.

The best nicknames are easy to type and mention. Avoid random numbers unless meaningful. Keep it consistent with your brand if you create content.
