Small Caps / Superscript & Subscript

True small capitals are a typographic feature of a font, not a set of characters. Unicode never intended to encode them, so what these generators use are phonetic characters from the International Phonetic Alphabet that happen to look like small capitals.

Because that was not their purpose, the set has gaps. There is no small-capital equivalent of every letter, and the ones that exist were added at different times for different reasons - which is why the letter q in particular is missing or substituted in most implementations.

The result is that small-caps output is usually not uniform. Some letters are genuine IPA small capitals, others are approximations, and a few pass through unchanged. On a font that renders IPA poorly, the mismatch is obvious.

Superscript digits and a handful of letters exist as dedicated codepoints, mostly inherited from older character sets for footnotes and chemistry. Subscript is sparser still, with several letters simply absent.

This means converted text is often partial: numbers convert cleanly, common letters mostly convert, and anything unusual passes through at full size. For anything where completeness matters, actual formatting is the right tool - though Discord offers none, which is why these substitutes exist at all.

Small caps are frequently used in role names, channel names and bio sections where space is tight but you still want clear hierarchy. Superscript is perfect for ordinal indicators like 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and subscript is useful for chemical formulas and mathematical notation.

Unlike bold or italic toggles, these glyphs are separate codepoints in the phonetic and super/subscript unicode blocks. That means they work in any text field, including places where rich formatting is not available, but a few letters may be missing from the set.
