Discord PFP Cropper

Discord always renders an avatar as a circle, but it stores a square. Whatever you upload is cropped to a square first, then masked to a circle at display time - which means the corners of your image are never visible, and anything important near an edge will be clipped.

The safe area is roughly the inscribed circle of your square: imagine a circle touching all four sides, and keep the subject inside it. A face centred in a square photo survives this fine. A logo with text along the bottom does not.

Discord stores avatars at up to 1024x1024. Uploading larger gains nothing, and uploading much smaller shows: a 64x64 source is visibly soft when Discord displays it at 128 in a profile popout.

PNG is the right choice for anything with hard edges, flat colour or transparency - logos, pixel art, illustrations. JPEG is better for photographs, where its compression is far more efficient and the artefacts are hidden by the detail in the image.

GIF avatars require Discord Nitro. Without it an uploaded GIF is accepted but shown as a single static frame, so the animation exists in storage and is simply never played. If a subscription lapses, previously animated avatars fall back to that first frame rather than being deleted.

One practical consequence of the circular mask: an animated avatar whose motion happens near the corners will look broken, because the visible portion never shows it. Keep movement central.

About 21% of a square image is lost to the circular mask, all of it in the corners. Keep faces and text near the centre and leave a little breathing room around the edges.
