The white medium star and its neighbours

The emoji star at U+2B50 is one specific character among dozens of star-like symbols in Unicode, most of which are plain text glyphs rather than emoji. It is the only one that renders as a filled yellow star on every platform without help.

The others - the black star at U+2605, the white star at U+2606 and the various dingbat stars - are text characters that take the colour of surrounding text. Those are what symbol pages offer for decorative use, and they behave completely differently in a nickname or channel name.

Rating, favouriting, decoration

Its three uses map to three contexts: rating something out of five, marking a favourite, and simple ornament. All three are literal - the star has picked up no slang meaning, which makes it one of the safest emoji to use with strangers.

On Discord it appears most in starboard bots, where reacting with a star pins a message to a highlights channel once it passes a threshold.
