How spoilers are marked

Wrapping text in double bars - `||like this||` - hides it behind a click-to-reveal block. It works in message content, embed descriptions and field values, and nests inside other markdown, so bold text inside a spoiler stays bold once revealed.

Attachments are spoilered differently: a file whose name begins with `SPOILER_` is hidden by Discord automatically, which is what the checkbox in the upload dialog actually does. Renaming a file to add that prefix has the same effect.

Spoilers hide content visually. They are not encryption and not a permission - the text is present in the message and any client, bot or log with access to the channel can read it without revealing anything. Do not use spoilers for anything that actually needs to stay private.

Where spoilers do not apply

Notification previews are the notable gap. Depending on the platform and settings, a push notification may show the raw message text including the spoilered part, which defeats the purpose for anything genuinely surprising.

Spoiler syntax also does not work in channel names, topics, nicknames or role names - the bars appear literally. And search indexes spoilered text normally, so a spoilered word is still findable.

When to use spoiler tags

Anything that might ruin a surprise belongs behind a spoiler. Movie, game and book discussions are the most common cases.
