Discord Emoji Maker

A custom emoji file must be 256 KB or smaller. That is the hard ceiling and it is the reason most uploads fail: a 512x512 PNG straight out of an image editor routinely exceeds it, while the same artwork resized to 128x128 comes in well under.

Discord displays emoji at 32x32 in the message list and 48x48 in the picker, and renders them larger only when a message contains nothing but emoji. Uploading anything above 128x128 therefore buys you no visible quality - it just spends your byte budget on pixels nobody sees.

Animated emoji are GIFs and are subject to the same 256 KB limit, which is far more restrictive in practice because every frame counts against it. Cutting frame count and palette size does more for a GIF than reducing dimensions.

At 32x32 there is room for one idea. Emoji that read well are built from a single bold shape with high contrast against both light and dark themes - remember that Discord users are split between the two, and a dark logo on a transparent background disappears entirely for anyone on dark mode.

Fine detail, thin lines and small text are lost. If your emoji contains a word, it will be an unreadable smudge in the message list. The reliable test is to shrink your artwork to 32 pixels on your own screen and look at it from normal viewing distance before uploading.

Transparent PNGs generally beat solid backgrounds, because a solid square looks heavy next to Discord's own rounded emoji set. Keep a couple of pixels of padding inside the canvas so the shape does not touch the edges.

Emoji are often displayed at 22 pixels inline. Crop tight on one shape or face and avoid thin outlines or small text, which disappear entirely at that scale.
