The least-used coloured heart

Orange Heart arrived in Unicode 9.0 in 2016 alongside the black heart, filling the last obvious gap in the primary colour set. It remains the least used of the coloured hearts by a wide margin.

Without a strong inherited association, its meaning is essentially warmth and friendliness - close enough to the yellow heart that most people simply use that instead.

Where it does get used

Its clearest use is seasonal: autumn, harvest and Halloween contexts where the colour is the point.

It is also common in colour-coded heart sequences, where a full spectrum is being spelled out and orange is needed to complete it.

In server configuration

Its structural use is almost entirely as a colour-role option, where it fills the orange slot in a spectrum rather than carrying meaning of its own.

It also appears in seasonal server themes during autumn, alongside the pumpkin and fallen-leaf emoji.

Distinguishing it from red and yellow

At small sizes it sits close enough to both the red and the yellow heart that members reliably confuse them in a reaction row.

If a reaction set needs several hearts to be told apart quickly, orange is the one to drop.

The colour nobody asked for first

Orange arrived in Unicode 9.0 in 2016, in the same batch as the black heart. Both were added to complete a set rather than to meet a specific demand, which is unusual - most emoji proposals cite existing usage.

That origin shows in how little it is used. The black heart found a strong niche almost immediately; orange never developed one, and remains the least used coloured heart.

Its clearest use is seasonal, where the colour rather than the heart is doing the work.
