The oldest emoji here, and a technical oddity
The red heart predates emoji entirely. It exists at U+2764 as a dingbat inherited from Wingdings-era character sets, which is why its codepoint is so much lower than the emoji added in 2010.
That history has a practical consequence: on its own, U+2764 is a black-and-white text glyph. It needs a following variation selector, U+FE0F, to request the colour emoji presentation. This is why a copied red heart sometimes pastes as an outline - the invisible selector was lost along the way.
What it means relative to the other hearts
Among the coloured hearts the red one is the most direct and the least ambiguous: love, in the plain sense. The others have all acquired secondary meanings through use, which the red heart has largely resisted.
That directness is why it reads as more serious than its neighbours. On Discord the purple and pink hearts do most of the affectionate work precisely because they carry less weight.
In server configuration
In reaction-role menus it commonly marks the general or announcements role, and in starboards it appears as a secondary trigger alongside the star.
As a channel prefix it is largely confined to relationship, appreciation and compliment channels, where the romantic reading is intended rather than incidental.
The invisible character problem
Because colour presentation depends on a following variation selector, this emoji is uniquely fragile in copy-paste. Systems that strip invisible characters turn it monochrome without changing anything visible in the source.
If a red heart in a channel name or nickname renders as a black outline, the selector was lost - recopying from a source that preserves it fixes the problem.
When to use it and when not to
It is the most emotionally direct heart, which makes it the right choice when the meaning is genuinely affection and the wrong one when it is not. Sent casually to someone you do not know well, it lands heavier than intended.
In server design it is best reserved for contexts where the romantic or deeply affectionate reading is wanted. For general warmth, the purple and yellow hearts do the same work without the weight.
As a reaction it is safe almost anywhere, because reactions are understood as lightweight in a way a message is not.

As a standard Unicode emoji rather than a Discord custom emoji, this renders anywhere text does and needs no server or Nitro. Each platform draws it with its own emoji font, so the artwork differs between Android, iOS, Windows and Mac while the character and its meaning stay identical.
