A symbol with a contested second meaning

Snowflake at U+2744 is another variation-selector character, drawn as a six-pointed crystal. Its literal meanings are snow, winter and cold, and in software it commonly marks something unique.

It also acquired a political pejorative sense in the late 2010s, used to imply someone is oversensitive. That reading is regional and context-dependent but live enough to cause misunderstanding in mixed international servers.

Discord's other snowflake

In Discord development, 'snowflake' means the 64-bit ID format used for every object on the platform, which is unrelated to the emoji but shares the name.

That overlap makes the emoji a natural marker for ID-related tooling and documentation channels.

In server configuration

It marks winter seasonal themes and, in development servers, channels about Discord IDs - where the platform's own use of the word snowflake makes it an apt marker.

The political pejorative reading means it is worth thinking twice before using it on a role name in a mixed international server.

Selector-dependent, and contested

It needs a variation selector for colour, so it can degrade to a monochrome glyph when copied through systems that strip invisible characters.

The political reading is the more consequential issue on a mixed server, and it is not something the character itself can signal either way.

A dingbat before it was an emoji

U+2744 was encoded long before emoji existed, as part of a block of decorative typographic symbols used in printing. Several snowflake variants were included, of which only this one acquired emoji presentation.

That is why its neighbours in the block - the tight trifoliate snowflake and the heavy chevron snowflake - remain plain text characters that inherit the surrounding colour.

It also explains the variation selector requirement: characters encoded as printing dingbats default to text presentation, and emoji presentation had to be requested explicitly when the two systems merged.
