The plain cloud and the weather set

Cloud at U+2601 is another pre-emoji symbol requiring a variation selector for colour presentation. On its own it means overcast weather, and by extension daydreaming, softness or cloud computing.

It anchors a family of weather composites - cloud with rain, snow, lightning, and the sun-behind-cloud variants - which are separate characters rather than modifications of it.

Aesthetic use

In bios it usually signals a soft or dreamy register rather than weather, often paired with the moon or sparkles.

Because most vendors draw it white or pale grey, it has the same light-theme visibility problem as the white heart when used as decoration.

In server configuration

It appears in soft-aesthetic channel naming and, in technical servers, as a marker for hosting and infrastructure channels.

As with the white heart, most vendors draw it pale, so it is a weak marker for anyone on Discord's light theme.

Another selector-dependent character

Like the sun, the plain cloud is inherited from older symbol sets and needs the selector for colour presentation.

The composite weather emoji - cloud with rain, snow, lightning - are emoji-block characters and do not have this problem.

From weather map to chat

The plain cloud belongs to a set of weather symbols encoded for meteorological and cartographic use, alongside the sun, the umbrella and the snowman. None were designed for conversation.

The detailed weather composites - cloud with rain, with snow, with lightning - came much later in Unicode 7.0, drawn from a different source and intended for forecasting applications.

The two generations look noticeably different in most vendor sets, which is why the plain cloud sits oddly beside the composites it is supposed to belong with.

Choosing between the cloud emoji

If you want weather, the composites are clearer: Cloud with Rain, Sun Behind Cloud and Cloud with Lightning all say something specific that the plain cloud does not.

If you want the aesthetic reading - softness, daydreaming, calm - the plain cloud is the right one, and pairing it with the moon or sparkles makes that reading unambiguous.

For technical contexts, there is no dedicated cloud-computing emoji, so the plain cloud does that work by default. It reads correctly in a channel name like infrastructure or hosting without needing explanation.
