A heart that took fourteen years to arrive

Pink Heart was only added in Unicode 15.0 in 2022, long after the other colours. It had been among the most requested missing emoji for years, because pink is the colour most associated with hearts in practice and its absence forced people to use the red or the two hearts emoji instead.

Because it is recent, support is not universal on older devices. A pink heart sent to someone on an unupdated phone may render as a blank box, which is not true of any of the older colours.

Soft affection

Its meaning settled quickly as gentle, sweet affection - less intense than red, warmer than purple. It is heavily used in aesthetic profile design where the softer palette matters.

It is distinct from the older pink-adjacent hearts such as the two hearts and the sparkling heart, which are compositions rather than a plain heart in pink.

In server configuration

It appears mainly in cosmetic colour-role menus and soft-aesthetic channel naming. Its recency is a practical constraint: members on older devices see a blank box where the marker should be.

For that reason servers wanting a pink marker often still use the two-hearts or sparkling-heart emoji, which have far longer support histories.

Support is not universal

Being from Unicode 15.0, it fails to render on devices that have not received an emoji font update. Members on older Android builds see a blank box.

For a functional marker - a reaction role, a rules gate - that is disqualifying, since some members simply cannot see what they are meant to click.

Fourteen years of requests

Pink Heart was among the most requested missing emoji for over a decade before its approval in Unicode 15.0. Proposals were repeatedly declined on the grounds that existing hearts were sufficient.

The counterargument that eventually succeeded was usage data: people were combining the two-hearts and sparkling-heart emoji specifically to approximate a plain pink heart.

It arrived alongside light blue and grey hearts, filling the last obvious gaps in the plain-colour set.
