High Voltage, not weather

The character at U+26A1 is formally High Voltage, and it originates as an electrical hazard symbol rather than a weather one. That is why it is a single bolt on a plain background rather than part of a cloud.

Its uses follow from the symbol: electricity and power, but also speed, energy and anything described as fast. In gaming contexts it marks speed buffs and energy meters almost universally.

Weather lightning is a different emoji

Cloud with Lightning at U+1F329 is the weather version. Using High Voltage for a storm is common and reads fine, but the two are distinct characters.

High Voltage renders more clearly at small sizes, which is why it wins in practice even where the weather one is technically correct.

In server configuration

It marks announcement and alert channels where urgency is the point, and appears in gaming servers on speed, energy and power-up roles.

Its clear silhouette at small sizes makes it one of the more legible functional markers in a channel list.

High Voltage has default emoji presentation despite its low codepoint, so unlike the sun and cloud it does not need a selector.

Its origin as a hazard sign is why it reads as a warning in some contexts and as speed in others, with no way to disambiguate from the character alone.

Its speed and energy meanings are entirely a product of later use, borrowed from how the symbol is used on packaging, batteries and game interfaces.

The weather bolt, Cloud with Lightning, came separately in the 2014 weather batch and remains far less used despite being the technically correct choice for a storm.
