Dog Face and its relatives

Dog Face at U+1F436 is the stylised head, usually drawn as a beagle or similar floppy-eared breed. As with cats there is a separate full-body Dog at U+1F415, plus service dog, guide dog and poodle variants added later.

Unlike cats, dogs received only one face rather than a set of expression variants, which is why dog reactions are far less expressive than cat ones.

Vendor variation is unusually large

Breed choice differs sharply between vendors, and the resulting faces are noticeably different animals. Anyone relying on a specific look should expect it not to survive across platforms.

In practice the emoji reads as 'dog' regardless, so the variation matters only for aesthetic use in profiles.

In server configuration

Like the cat, it prefixes pet channels and appears in animal-themed role sets. It is less used decoratively, because the face reads as more literal.

Vendor breed variation means it is a poor choice where the specific look matters to a server's visual identity.

Breed varies, meaning does not

Vendors draw noticeably different breeds, so a dog emoji chosen for its look will not match across platforms. The meaning is unaffected.

As with cats, the face and the full-body dog are separate characters and autocomplete offers both.

One face, many breeds

Unlike the cat, the dog received a single face with no expression variants. The carrier sets simply did not include them, and no proposal has since added any.

Vendors compensated by choosing distinctive breeds, which is why the emoji looks like a different animal on each platform - there was no canonical design to follow.

Later additions covered service dogs, guide dogs and the poodle, but none of them are expression variants of the original face.
