Cat Face, not Cat

This is Cat Face at U+1F431, the stylised head. There is a separate full-body Cat at U+1F408, and a further set of nine cat faces with specific expressions - grinning, heart-eyes, crying, pouting - which is more expression variants than any other animal received.

That over-representation is a direct inheritance from Japanese carrier sets, where cat emoji were used as a softer parallel to the human smiley set.

Beyond literal cat content, the cat face is heavily used as a marker of cuteness or softness in bios and role names, in the same register as kaomoji.

The full-body cat is the better choice when the animal itself is the subject, since the face reads as a character rather than an animal.

Servers with mascot systems often use it as a category header, where the face reads as a character rather than as the animal itself.

Face versus full body

Cat Face and Cat are different characters with different shortcodes, and autocomplete returns both. The face is the stylised head; the full body is a side-view animal.

For pet channels about actual cats the full body reads more literally; for cute or mascot use the face is the conventional choice.

Why cats got nine faces

The Japanese carrier sets included a full range of cat expressions parallel to the human smileys, and Unicode encoded all of them. No other animal received comparable treatment.

The result is nine cat faces covering grinning, joy, heart-eyes, wry smiles, kissing, weariness, crying and pouting - an expressive range that exists for no other creature.

That is a direct artefact of the source standard rather than a decision about what emoji users would need, and it is why cat reactions are so much more nuanced than dog ones.
