Smiling Face with Horns

The purple grinning devil at U+1F608 is one of two devil emoji; the other, U+1F47F, is the angry-faced version. The smiling one means mischief rather than evil - playful trouble, teasing, a joke at someone's expense.

Both are purple rather than red across every major vendor, which is inherited from the Japanese oni tradition rather than from Western devil imagery.

Reading the two apart

The angry-faced version reads as genuinely hostile and is used for villains and anger. Sending it where the smiling one was meant lands very differently.

At 32 pixels the difference is a mouth shape, which makes the pair one of the easier emoji mix-ups to commit by accident.

An oni, not a devil

The purple colour is the clue. Western devil imagery is red; the purple horned figure comes from the Japanese oni, a folkloric ogre, which is what the original carrier emoji depicted.

Unicode's name for it - Smiling Face with Horns - deliberately avoids naming either tradition, which is why vendor designs vary in how demonic they look.

The mischief reading follows from the oni rather than from the devil: an oni is a trickster and a nuisance more than an embodiment of evil.
