Self-deprecation, not circuses

Clown Face was added in Unicode 9.0 in 2016, at the height of a wave of creepy-clown sightings, and it was initially read as sinister. That is not how it is used now.

Its dominant meaning online is self-directed: calling yourself a clown for having been foolish, naive or wrong. On Discord it appears constantly in self-mocking replies and, when aimed at someone else, as a fairly pointed insult meaning their take was absurd.

Aimed outward it is an insult

The self-deprecating and accusatory uses look identical in text, and the difference is only in who the target is. Used at another member it is not gentle, and many servers treat it as a personal attack under their rules.

That double reading makes it risky in a heated thread, where a joke about yourself is easily read as a jab at whoever posted above you.

In server configuration

It almost never appears in server configuration, and deliberately so - many servers list it explicitly in their rules as a reaction that counts as a personal attack when left on another member's message.

Where it does appear structurally is in self-nominated 'hall of shame' channels, where the self-directed reading is the whole point.

Check your server's rules first

Because it functions as an insult when aimed outward, a number of servers list it explicitly among prohibited reactions. It is one of the few emoji that appears by name in moderation rules.

If you are unsure how a server treats it, it is a safer emoji to avoid than to test.

Encoded during a moment

Clown Face was approved for Unicode 9.0 in 2016, coinciding with a widely reported wave of creepy-clown sightings. The proposal predated that, but the timing shaped early reception.

The design vendors chose is closer to a circus clown than a horror one, which is part of why the sinister reading did not stick.

The self-deprecating meaning developed on English-language social media within a couple of years and is now dominant, which is unusually fast for a meaning shift.
