Loudly Crying Face and emotional inflation

Added in Unicode 6.0 in 2010, this emoji shows a face with eyes closed and streams of tears. It was designed for genuine distress, and it is still used that way - but it has been steadily repurposed for overwhelming feeling of any kind, including happiness, secondhand embarrassment and amusement.

That drift is a general pattern with emoji: the strongest available symbol gets used for progressively milder feelings until a stronger one is needed. The mild crying face at U+1F622 now reads as understated by comparison, despite depicting the same emotion.

Reading it in context

Because it covers both real sadness and performative reaction, it is one of the more ambiguous emoji in a text-only medium. A single one after a sentence usually signals genuine feeling; three or more usually signals the performative sense.

On Discord it appears heavily as a reaction to wholesome content, where the meaning is closer to 'this is too much' than to actual upset. Reading it as literal distress in that context is a common misfire.

In server configuration

It rarely appears in structural configuration, because its meaning is too ambiguous for a gate or a role marker. Where it does show up is in vent and support channel names, signalling the register of the channel.

Some servers deliberately exclude it from starboards, since it is left on both genuinely sad and merely overwhelming content and produces a highlights feed with no coherent theme.

Distinguishing it from the quieter cry

Autocomplete on cry returns both this and the single-tear face, and the shortcodes differ by one word. In a hurry the wrong one is easy to send, and the two land very differently.

Neither takes modifiers, so once picked the character is stable across every platform and field.

The louder of two

Both crying faces came from the carrier sets, and the distinction between them was intended to be intensity: one tear versus streams.

In practice the loud one absorbed most of the usage and then broadened to cover any overwhelming feeling, leaving the quiet one to mean specifically mild disappointment.

That is emotional inflation in miniature, and it is why a single tear now reads as more restrained than its design suggests.
