One of several check marks, and the wrong one is common

The green check mark button at U+2705 is the one people usually want: a bold white tick on a green rounded square, unmistakable at small sizes. It has emoji presentation by default and needs no variation selector.

There are at least three others that get confused with it. U+2714 is a heavy check mark that renders black by default and needs a variation selector for colour. U+2611 is a ballot box with check. U+2713 is a plain check mark that is text-only on most platforms and often renders as a thin, easily-missed glyph.

For anything load-bearing - a rules channel, a role menu, a reaction gate - the green button is the reliable choice, because the others render inconsistently and some are invisible against dark backgrounds.

As a reaction and a role marker

It is the default reaction-role emoji on most servers because its meaning needs no explanation. It is also the standard acknowledgement on task and ticket channels, where reacting to a message marks it handled.

The green square makes it visible against both Discord themes, which is why it outperforms the bare check marks in practice regardless of their technical validity.

In server configuration

This is the workhorse of server configuration. It is the standard rules-acceptance reaction, the default verification gate, the usual 'resolved' marker on ticket and support channels, and the most common reaction-role emoji overall.

Its reliability is the reason: the green square renders identically everywhere, is visible against both themes, and needs no explanation to a new member.

Why this one and not the others

Of the four confusable check marks, only this one has default emoji presentation, a coloured background and no variation-selector dependency. The rest are text glyphs that may render thin, black or invisible.

For a reaction gate this is decisive: a member who cannot see the emoji cannot click it, and a monochrome tick against a dark theme is effectively invisible.

Built for visibility

The green button design was chosen deliberately to give a check mark that would be visible at emoji size against any background, which the existing text check marks were not.

That is why it has a coloured square behind it while the older check marks are bare glyphs - the background is the feature.

It is a good example of an emoji encoded to solve a practical rendering problem rather than to represent a new concept.
