A late addition that became an aesthetic staple

Butterfly at U+1F98B arrived in Unicode 9.0 in 2016, relatively late for such a common subject. Vendors draw it in noticeably different colours - blue, orange and multicoloured versions all exist - which is unusual variation for a single emoji.

It carries the transformation and rebirth symbolism butterflies have generally, and on Discord it is heavily used in soft and Y2K-adjacent profile aesthetics.

Colour variation matters here

Because vendors disagree on colour, a butterfly chosen to match a bio's palette on desktop may clash on a phone. It is one of the clearest cases where designing around a specific rendering does not survive.

For colour-critical use, a symbol that vendors draw consistently is a safer choice.
