A late addition with a specific aesthetic

Black Heart arrived in Unicode 9.0 in 2016, much later than the red, and it was requested specifically for expressing dark humour, grief and a certain aesthetic register rather than as a colour variant.

It became strongly associated with alternative and goth-adjacent online identity, and on Discord it is a staple of dark-theme profile design - it is one of the few emoji that reads as intentional rather than decorative in a bio.

Sorrow and style, depending on reader

It carries two live meanings: mourning, in the way a black armband does, and simply a preferred aesthetic with no sadness implied. Which one a reader takes depends almost entirely on context.

That ambiguity makes it a poor choice for condolence messages on a mixed-age server, where the aesthetic reading may dominate. The white heart is often the safer symbol there.

In server configuration

It is the standard prefix for dark-theme and alternative-aesthetic channels, and a frequent marker on cosmetic roles in servers with a monochrome palette.

Because it renders almost invisibly against dark backgrounds in some vendor designs, it is a weak choice for anything functional like a reaction-role marker.

No selector needed

Unlike the red heart, the black heart is a true emoji-block character with default emoji presentation, so it needs no variation selector and cannot lose its colour in transit.

That makes it more reliable than the red heart in fields that pass through sanitising systems, despite being the newer character.

Approved for a specific expressive need

The Unicode 9.0 proposal argued that no existing heart could express dark humour, grief or a monochrome aesthetic, and that people were using other symbols as substitutes.

That is unusual: most emoji proposals argue from frequency of the concept rather than from an expressive gap.

It found its niche almost immediately, which is why it is far more used than the orange heart approved in the same batch.
